A TWO-DAY CONFERENCE ORGANIZED BY THE SAWWAF CHAIR IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT IN CELEBRATION OF AUB's 15Oth ANNIVERSARY

Overview

Cognitive Analytics Management Processes are at the heart of digital transformation of organizations from basic to smart. They generate evidence-based insights to make informed decisions to achieve desired shared values for a sustainable growth. Digital transformation is changing the world, and everything is getting smarter (smart business, smart city, smart education, smart bank, smarter government, smart health, smart home, smart love, smart sport, etc). Recent market surveys showed a market growth of more than 400% in the last five years with an expected continuation at such radical growth. The surveys also indicated an acute shortage of talented people with both analytics and management skills worldwide as well as in the MENA region.

Objectives

 To bring awareness about new developments in big data technologies, models, and analytics;  To disseminate information on the world best practices in Business Analytics and Applications;  To share experiences on shared value creation with stakeholders (governments, businesses and academia);  To bring together top academics and industrial experts to share experiences with attendees;  To announce the launch of our new Master of Science in Business Analytics at AUB;  To develop collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders.

Activities

 Presentations from senior scholars, professional experts and technology vendors working on big data and business analytics  Presentations on shared value creation and innovation towards smart organizations  Discussion Panels after presentations will be conducted on the following themes: o Smart Organizations; (Businesses; banking; cities; retailing etc.); o Smart Government (Improved provision of electronic government services); o Smart Education (Smart learning and operations) o Smart Energy/ Smart Logistics and Supply Chain of products and services.

Mr Moutran is a renowned Road Safety Expert with a Degree in Law and a Master Degree in International Law. Certified Expert in Road Safety from the US DoT since 2013; received recognition awards from the state of Mississippi in appreciation to the valuable and outstanding services to the safety of the state's citizens and serval certificates from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Recently, Michel was awarded the Prince Michael Road Safety Award in The House of Lords - London representing Asia in June 2014. Michel is a graduate of the Road Safety Management Master Program from the Renault Foundation in affiliation with WHO and NHTSA to build capacities in the low & middle income countries, in order to implement well the UN decade pillars. He was a founder at YASA in 1998 the first Road Safety NGO in MENA offering consultancy and advisory dealing with Road Safety Legal Standards and Regulations since 1998. Dr. Hoballah is Chairman and CEO, ICTTT Consulting. He is a lecturer at the American University of Beirut (AUB), the Lebanese American University (LAU) and CNAM. He is also Chairman of the Advisory Committee for Teralight Gateway Holdings Inc. (TGHI), and Chairman for the Advisory Committee of the MLI Group, Survivability Solutions. Dr. Hoballah also served until August 2015 as the TRA Chairman and CEO since April 2010 and the Head of Telecom Technologies Unit since March 2007. Ibrahim H. Osman obtained his Ph.D. in Operations Research/Management Science (1991) from the Management School, Imperial College, University of London, UK; MSc in Operations Research with distinction (1987) from University of Southampton, UK, and BS in Mathematics from the Lebanese University (1983). Dr Osman is currently the Husni Sawwaf Endowed Chair in Business and Management. Member of the Lebanese Parliament & Minister of State for Administrative Reform
Nabil de Freige is a member of the Lebanese Parliament and is a Minister of State for Administrative Reform since February 2014. He was born in Beirut on August 31, 1955. He graduated from the Higher Institute of Commerce and Management in Paris (1975 - 1980). He was a Member of the Board of Directors of the Agricultural Research Institute (1989 - 2000), and he is a Member of the Board of Directors of Alban Lebanon (Candia). He is the President of the Association to protect and improve the descendants of Arabian Horses since February 1998.  Mr. de Freige was elected as member of the Lebanese Parliament for the first time in September 2000. And in June 2009 he was elected for the third time as member of Parliament within the list of the Future Movement.

Dr. Bhatt Vadlamani has over 30 years of experience in leveraging technology for business transformations as CTO/CIO in enterprises including Citibank, Sun, eBay, Symantec, Blue Shield, and Disney.   He has been in the forefront of SAAS and Social Mobile Analytics on Cloud (SMAC) since early 2000s with a focus on security best practices. He is an acknowledged expert in applying social media analytics for competitive success in global enterprises, and holds a patent in that space. He is a frequent speaker in industry forums and has published widely in peer-reviewed academic journals including Strategic Management Journal and International Journal of Technology Management.   Dr. Vadlamani is an ITIL V3 Expert in IT Service Management. He obtained his Ph. D. in Strategic Management of Technology and M. S. in Operations Research from New York University. In addition, he did his M.B.A. from Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad and got his B. S. in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Technology at Delhi. He taught Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship, and Operations Research at New York University, City University of New York, and University of Massachusetts at Boston, and advises technology startups on obtaining early rounds funding.

Prior to his current career in academia, which has included leadership and management roles in Brunel Business School (the Times Higher Education 2013 Business School of the Year), Amir has worked extensively within the Financial Services and Professional Services sector working for and consulting to many leading global corporations including JPMorgan, UBS Investment Bank, KPMG Consulting, BAE Systems, Sony, and the BBC. In parallel with his industry experiences, he continues to be research active in the field of operations management and operations research as well as continuing to act as external examiner and advisor to a number of universities nationally and internationally (predominantly in the MENA, Gulf and South Asia regions). He also continues to be an active member on grant funding bodies having been successively appointed to the Peer Review College of the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), as well as providing academic service to other leading national and international research funding bodies including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), European Commission (EU), the British Academy, the British Council, the Danish National Research Foundation (DNRF), the Natural and National Science Foundation of China (NNSFC), and the Qatar National Research Foundation (QNRF).

Mr. Merza Hasan, a Kuwaiti national, was elected in 2006 to represent thirteen countries, at the World Bank (WB) Board of the Executive Directors (WB-BED). Since 2012, Mr. Hasan became the Dean of the WB-DED consisting of one hundred eighty countries, where he considers and decides on proposals made by the President in relation to: IBRD loans and guarantees, IDA credits and grants, IFC investments, and MIGA guarantees, in addition to decisions on policies that impact the WB’s general operations. As an Executive Director, he has a dual responsibility –carry the interests and concerns of his group of countries that elected him forward to the WB’s management, as well as carry the interests and concerns of the WB’ management backward to his group of countries Mr. Hasan holds a PHD in Management Science from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, U.K. He enjoys a diverse professional background. He was the State Under-Secretary for the Public Authority for Industry. He held several positions at the University of Kuwait including Professor and Dean College of Business, Chairman of accreditation committee, Assistance Vice president, and the Kuwaiti Embassy Cultural Counselor in USA, as well as other managerial positions in private companies and serving on the boards of several public institutions.

Professor of Operations Managemen,t Imperial College Business School, UK The BML Munjal Chair in Global Operations and Management.  Director of the MSc in Business Analytics. Previously he was an ICREA Research Professor in the Department of Economics and Business at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He has a Masters in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University and a Ph.D in Operations Research from MIT.  He has been a Visiting Professor at the Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University) and has taught classes at Indian School of Business (ISB), Tuck School of Management (Dartmouth), IESE, INSEAD, Stern School of Business (NYU) and London Business School. His research interests are in service design and analytics, transportation and operational pricing of consumer goods and services.  He is the co-author of the book “Theory and Practice of Revenue Management”. He has published in Operations Research and Management Science journals and is the co-winner of the INFORMS Impact Prize (2016), the Lanchester Prize (2005), the Pricing and RM Section Price (2004).

Chris has 30 years of experience in the Financial Services industry, and is a charted accountant with a background in software development. He has worked on client engagements in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and in North and South America. Chris started his career in 1986 with Andersen Consulting, and lead their Financial Services practice in the Middle East from 1995 - 2000. In 2000 Chris left to co-found MA Partners, a specialist data analytics consultancy, and remained with the Firm until it was sold in 2008 to Detica P.L.C, a FTSE 250 company specializing in data analytics and risk management. Chris joined SAS in 2010.

Dr. Hammou Messatfa – IBM
Government Technical Leader - Europe
Dr. Hammou Messatfa is the IBM Government Technical Leader for Europe with a main analytics competency and culture for better outcomes. He has over 30 years of experience in delivering modeling and simulation services for public and private sector clients. This includes both project management and technical leadership in Business Analytics and Optimization, including predictive analytics, data and text mining, operations research, business process modeling and simulation, business forecasting, network optimization, and systems development. Through IBM’s Academic Initiative, Dr Messatfa is helping universities and business schools to consider adding analytics in their course offerings, and establishing new degree programs. Early in his career with IBM Dr. Messatfa was a Senior Researcher leading statistical and data analysis projects at the Paris Scientific Centre taking a lead role in the formulation of IBM's Data Mining strategy, methods tools, techniques and related training for IBMers with diverse backgrounds. Dr. Messatfa also held academic appointments with different Universities in the Mathematical Sciences Department where he taught courses in Operations Research, Statistics and Mathematics. He holds a Ph.D in Analytics for Social Choice Theory, along with a number of patents in the analytics arena

Since 2011, Fady Ayoub is the head of Business Intelligence division at Banque du Liban Information Technology department. In this occupation he managed and built with the IT team, the business users and the external experts and consultants a Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence system for Banque du Liban: BBIS: BDL Business Intelligence System. Fady joined the development division of the Information Technology department at Banque du Liban in 1997 where he was assigned the leadership of nationwide projects like Central Credit Registry. He acquired high expertise in technology and data through more than 25 years of banking software development. Fady is responsible for the continuous evolution of two main projects at Banque du Liban:
  • BBIS: BDL Business Intelligence System,
  • CDR: Centrale Des Risques, the Central Credit Registry.
He holds an engineering degree from Ecole Supérieure d'Ingenieurs de Beyrouth (ESIB).

Gergi has built strong teams across geographies, industries and segments, elevating the SAP brand through customer success. Under his leadership and growth strategy the region has expanded to include new offices and contributed significantly to the growth in MENA He brings with him over 15 years of experience in working with various IT multinationals in the Middle East and Africa region. Prior to joining SAP Gergi held the position of Regional Sales Manager for Cisco in Qatar, where he built the company’s enterprise business, led the public sector team, and grew the commercial business in Qatar, Oman and Afghanistan. Gergi started his career with Sun Microsystems as a Systems Engineer and quickly progressed to take on the roles of Enterprise Sales Manager and sales lead for the company’s large accounts.
